On track again

I’ve been overwhelmed with my projekt during some time, but now I feel that I’m back in control. Too much reading of books and discussion groups on the internet can apparently screw you over. All the different opinions and pieces of advice turn me into a passive captain.

This Saturday I went to the harbour to speak with some experienced people and they made me feel easier at heart. When I asked them about changing my rig and showed them the wires they thought I was silly, and one of them started cursing loudly. ”Never in hell that you need to replace those!” he yelled at the top of his lungs. So I think I’ve now settled for the old rigging – which indeed looks brand new – and can spend that money on something else.

We also spoke some about painting the bottom, and found a scratch on the bottom of the keel. This small damaged section is now priority number one in the project. I will take care of it tomorrow, then go on with refinishing the topsides and painting the bottom. Then I will hopefully be ready to put Sofia back in the water and take it from there.

So long!

Springtime

Yet again I have been inactive on the blog. I have had some vacation once more, but now I’m back home and fully energized. While I was gone, the wind had torn the cover on the boat, so I continued the process of undressing it by removing the construction on which the plastic rests. I don’t know the English word apparently.

I have started throwing stuff I don’t think I will need to make place for more useful gadets. Oh, and I turned the power on again after my tinkering with the cables. It seems to work. Brilliant! So that’s where we stand right now. Tomorrow I probably will order something expensive just to get that started too.

A short update

It’s been a week since I wrote last time. Time really flies! Even though I’ve been inactive here on my homepage I’ve got stuff done in real life. I’m teaching to the best of my abilities and in my free time I work on the boat and practice football.

I’ve bought things to make the electrical system neat and that’s what I’m working on right now. I have never done anything like it before, so it takes some time. But I’m learning and I think it will come out really nice!

The only problem, which is a small one, is that the plastic cover on top of the boat is leaking. So every time it has rained or snowed (which it has done quite a lot the last days) I have had to get the water out with a small pump so it doesn’t freeze and break anything on deck. But I hope the weather will turn around soon and bring some warmth and sunshine.

So, to sum it all up: Life is good! Johan won a big journalistic reward today as well, so I think he’s happy too.

So long!

Electrical progress

I’ve been working as good as I can with a multimeter and some coloured tape, and now I think I have mapped most of the cables running in the boat. I will start making diagrams of the circuits next time I’m on the boat. It’s not too easy since I’m not very good with this kind of work, and some of the connections is still making me weep.

This is the backside of the instrument panel for the engine. It’s terrible.

In some places, where it’s hard to reach with arms and hands, there are small explosions of grey cable. My brain has worked hard and I kind of understand this now. I’m going to mark the cables to the best of my abilities.

Since I posted on couchsurfing about my plans I’ve gotten quite a lot of mails and messages. I think it will turn out great!
